Expert: MegaFon leads by LTE, LTE-A data speed in Moscow, reg in 2018

By Yekaterina Yezhova

MOSCOW, Dec 4 (PRIME) -- MegaFon is the fastest by data transfer among Russia’s four major mobile operators – comprising also MTS, VimpelCom, and T2 RTK Holding – in Moscow and the Moscow Region in LTE and LTE-A networks, and T2 RTK Holding led in 3G, news and analytical agency TelecomDaily General Director Denis Kuskov said on Tuesday at a presentation of a mobile connection research.

“From the data we have we can conclude that almost all companies have advantages and disadvantages. I’d say that MegaFon leads in LTE and LTE-A with a significant margin. (T2 RTK Holding’s brand) Tele2 showed the best results in 3G in Moscow. (VimpelCom’s brand) Beeline ensures high-quality voice connection and shows good dynamics in LTE all across the Moscow Region,” Kuskov said.

“We see that MTS raised speed in all technologies. We should underline successes of Tele2 and Beeline in voice services. In 2018, the bulk of traffic ran via 4G, and LTE was the main one. In 2018, the average speed in 3G grew 20%, but the indicator decreased 15–20% in LTE. The main result is that the capital maintains its leading position in the nationwide speed rating in 2018.”

TelecomDaily experts has tested services of voice connection and mobile access to the Internet via technologies 3G, LTE, and LTE-A in Moscow and the Moscow Region for more than three weeks in November. The research was aimed at assessing the quality parameters of the services provided and the territory of coverage.

Kuskov also said that the operators had done colossal work in 2018 to improve functioning of networks with a constantly growing traffic.

Technical Director at the Moscow branch of T2 RTK Holding Alexei Krushinin said the operator develops a smart approach to capital expenditures. “We invest in the sectors that require money and in the required volumes. We intend to develop actively in 2019 and improve the quality of connection in the Moscow metro in stretches between the stations,” he told reporters.

Operating director at the capital branch of MegaFon Anton Pirogov said the operator will also actively evolve in 2019 and will do a lot for better connection in the underground.

Head of the quality department at VimpelCom Alexander Galchenkov said the company increased its investments in 2018 by more than 10%. “Two thirds of our investments are spent on LTE and preparation for 5G,” he said.

All the four operators ensured an equally high level of connection quality, but MegaFon and Tele2 led by the time of connection with VimpelCom and MTS following. MTS and MegaFon are the best by the coefficient of speech quality.

The operators’ average speed of data transfer in LTE is as follows: MegaFon has 27.999 Mbit/s; MTS 16.447 Mbit/s; VimpelCom 12.615 Mbit/s; and T2 RTK Holding 12.512 Mbit/s.

The operators’ average speed in LTE–A is as follows: MegaFon has 28.061 Mbit/s; MTS 23.859 Mbit/s; T2 RTK Holding 14.597 Mbit/s; and VimpelCom 13.754 Mbit/s.

The average 3G speed is as follows: T2 RTK Holding has 13.710 Mbit/s; VimpelCom 12.615 Mbit/s; MTS 12.551 Mbit/s; and MegaFon 9.438 Mbit/s.

The operators’ average speed in LTE–A is as follows: MegaFon with 24.320 Mbit/s; MTS with 21.401 Mbit/s; T2 RTK Holding with 14.011 Mbit/s; and VimpelCom with 12.761 Mbit/s.

The average speed in 3G is as follows: T2 RTK Holding has 10.998 Mbit/s; VimpelCom 10.820 Mbit/s; MTS 10.691 Mbit/s; and MegaFon 7.318 Mbit/s.
